Thruxton Thriller Sunday

Part 3: Sunday Qualifying and Race Day.

Sunday 23rd April promised another action packed day of racing from this Classic Sports Car Club event held at the Thruxton circuit in Hampshire with the bonus of a special parade lap of Ford GT40s during the afternoon.

With dry weather the racing and qualifying was again flat out with spectators treated to some great battles for the lead in many of the races and positions hard fought for in the middle of the pack.

The afternoon tea treat of a parade lap from a selection of Ford GT40s caught the imagination of all who were there with all eyes turned track side, especially as these cars had been parked up all morning near the paddock tunnel allowing spectators to have a good look around these stunning machines beforehand.

One of the best races of the day was the CSCC Adams & Page Swinging Sixties Group 1 race, the last race of the day. The Chevrolet Corvette of Neil Merry dominated the race until the Wolfe and Thompson TVR Tuscan V8 finally chased him down and took the race lead on lap 14 but a stop go penalty allowed the number 97 Chevrolet Camero through to first place and it was a hard dash back through the pack for the TVR to see if the lead could be regained. The loss of a wheel from a Reliant Sabre brought out the red flags and with just minutes and a few laps to go the race was called, an unfortunate anticlimax when there was every chance the lead could have been snatched back in the final laps.
